מאוריינטליזם גרמני למזרחנות ישראלית

מזרח חדש הוא מחקר היסטורי מעמיק על תולדות המזרחנות הציונית והישראלית. שורשיו של תחום הידע הזה – חקר הערבית, האסלאם וההיסטוריה של המזרח התיכון – באוניברסיטאות הגרמניות של המאה התשע-עשרה וראשית המאה העשרים: רוב מייסדיו בארץ היו יהודים-גרמנים שצמחו במסורת המזרחנית של מרכז אירופה, והם שהביאו את תחום הידע לאוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, וממנה למערכת האקדמית כולה. באמצעות ניתוח של תיעוד ארכיוני עשיר בגרמנית, בערבית, באנגלית ובעברית משרטט הספר את התהליך המורכב של הגירת הידע המזרחני מגרמניה לארץ תוך התמקדות בשאלה מה קרה למחקר, ולחוקרים עצמם, כאשר המפגש עם המזרח הפך מטקסטואלי-פילולוגי למפגש פיזי ממשי, רווי סתירות ומתחים, שברקע שלו הסכסוך היהודי-הערבי המתעצם. בין השאר הוא מתעד את המשימות שקיבלו עליהם המזרחנים מחוץ לחדר העבודה ולספרייה, כמו הניסיון לקרב בין יהודים לערבים ושיתוף הפעולה עם הממסד הביטחוני.
הספר מתאר את מסלול התפתחותו הייחודי של תחום המזרחנות מאמצע שנות העשרים ועד אמצע שנות השישים של המאה העשרים, ושופך אור חדש על התפתחות המחקר האקדמי בכללותו בפלשתינה המנדטורית ובראשית ימיה של מדינת ישראל. בכך משמש הספר מקרה מבחן לניתוח הזיקה המורכבת בין עבודה מדעית "טהורה" לבין סוגיות פוליטיות, חברתיות ותרבותיות, ומציע נקודת מבט חדשה בשורשיו של הסכסוך היהודי-הערבי ובתפקיד שמילא הידע המדעי בעיצובו.
ד״ר עמית לוי הוא חוקר בחוג ללימודי ישראל באוניברסיטת חיפה. הוא שימש כעמית מחקר וחוקר אורח באוניברסיטאות אוקספורד, ויסקונסין-מדיסון, האוניברסיטה העברית והאוניברסיטה הפתוחה. עמית עוסק בהיסטוריה של ידע והעברת ידע והשפעתם על מפגשים בין-תרבותיים במאה העשרים, במיוחד בהקשר של יחסי יהודים-ערבים.

A New Orient is an in-depth historical study on the history of Zionist and Israeli Oriental Studies, particularly the study of Arabic, Islam, and Middle Eastern history, as a field of knowledge rooted in 19th and early 20th century German universities. Most of its founders in Israel were German-Jewish scholars who emerged from the Central European Orientalist tradition, and introduced this field of knowledge to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem – and subsequently to the entire Israeli academic system. Through the analysis of rich archival documentation, the book outlines the complex process of migrating Orientalist knowledge. It focuses on what happened to the research and the researchers themselves when their encounter with the Orient shifted from a textual-philological one, following the traditions of German academia, to an actual encounter, fraught with contradictions and tensions, against the backdrop of the intensifying Arab-Jewish conflict. The book sheds new light on the development of academic research as a whole in Mandate Palestine and the early years of Israel, serving as a rich case study for analyzing the complex relationship between 'pure' scientific work and political, social, and cultural issues. It also offers a new perspective on the roots of the Arab-Jewish conflict and the role scientific knowledge played in shaping it.
Dr. Amit Levi is a researcher in the Department of Israel Studies at the University of Haifa. He has served as a research fellow and visiting scholar at Oxford University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Hebrew University, and the Open University of Israel. Amit's research focuses on the history of knowledge and its migration, and their impact on cross-cultural encounters in the 20th century, particularly in the context of Jewish-Arab relations.
