Semester:
Offered:
2016

Ofer Ashkenazi
Annual Seminar - 39353

Course Aims:

The common use of the term "Cold War" refers to the global power structure between the Second World War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. This seminar takes a different approach, referring to the Cold War as a distinguished and intricate framework of particular relations between ideologies, self-perceptions, and memories. This framework goes beyond the period between 1945 and 1990. It also includes phenomena beyond the narrow realms of international relations, including cultural, intellectual and artistic developments. The seminar discussions will examine the different manifestations of the Cold War and associate them with its ideologies and thoughts.
The students will be familiar with the major texts produced during the Cold War era, and the major trends in scholarship on the era. Based on this knowledge, they will be able to write an original research paper on the topic.
